James
Bolton
Is a garden designer and historian.
Initially he trained with the Direction des Parcs et Jardins in Paris, then took a course in
Garden Design at the Inchbald School of Design
and subsequently was head gardener at the Old
Rectory, Farnborough for two years. He set up
his garden design business in
1992 and then James Bolton Garden Tours Ltd in 2003.
Since then he has been involved with a
specialist perennial plant nursery and designed
gardens in, and around, Oxford and Cambridge,
London, Sussex and the Cotswolds. He has also
designed gardens in Portugal and the United
States.
James Bolton lectures
extensively on garden history
and plants. He has set up and
administered courses at the
Inchbald School of Design,
Middlesex University and NADFAS.
He has, for the last ten
years, organised tailor-made
tours for individual groups,
private banks, NADFAS, the NACF
and The Worshipful Company of
Gardeners to gardens in
Italy, Normandy, Spain and
England. He also runs Border
Lines, the oldest company in the
UK specialising in tours to
private gardens. He has written
a number of articles on gardens
and his book on garden
ornaments, Garden Mania, was
published in 2000.
Sophia Wright
Has a degree
from Durham University and a Diploma
from the Victoria and Albert Museum
in Fine and Decorative Arts. She
has worked in the art world both for
the Chairman of Phillips, and with
the galleries of Johnny Van Haeften
in London and Horstmann and Godfrey
in Hong Kong. Subsequently she has
worked in PR, corporate project
management and in journalism both in
London and Hong Kong, where she
wrote for the South China Morning
Post. She learnt Italian
while based in Rome for two years
and her experience of living in
seven different countries during the
past 20 years has provided her with
some useful skills for her
organisational role in James Bolton
Garden Tours
James
and Karin live at
Clapton Manor
from which they also run a highly
rated Bed and Breakfast.
